Find Your New Favorite International Cuisine with These Globe-Trotting Cookbooks

Our favorite cookbooks are more than a collection of recipes—they offer a bridge to new cultures, histories, and ideas. At The Experiment, our goal is to publish a wide range of cookbooks that encompass these sentiments, and that’s why we think it’s crucial to find chefs, cooks, and foodies who have lived and experienced the cultures they write about. Read on to learn about some of our favorite diverse cookbooks, along with the talented authors who dreamed them up.

Caribbean Vegan
by Taymer Mason

Barbadian chef Taymer Mason grew up in a family of cooks who taught her to make—and love—traditional Caribbean cuisine. After going vegan in college, her passion became vegan cooking; in fact, she founded a gourmet catering company, which she still runs today! Caribbean Vegan is Taymer’s take on authentically veganized island cuisine. One of our favorite recipes from the book is Brule Jol, which represents how easily attainable and delicious Caribbean cooking can be.

East Meets Vegan
by Sasha Gill

When Sasha Gill embarked on a vegan lifestyle, she had to take her family’s food and heritage with her—it was too important (and delicious) to leave behind. Filled with over 90 Asian-style recipes, East Meets Vegan offers up vegan alternatives to Sasha’s favorites: spring rolls, red bean pancakes, shiitake ramen, mango lassis, and so much more. Having grown up in Singapore, Sasha is now a food blogger and a medical student at Oxford.

Sushi Modoki
by iina

In Sushi Modoki, Tokyo-based chef and author iina has performed a true culinary feat: transforming traditional sushi rolls and bites into all-vegan re-creations! With over 50 recipes and 5 styles of sushi (nigiri, maki, chirashi, inari, and oshi), you’ll find so much more than cucumber rolls. If you’re curious to try your hand at vegan sushi, check out her recipe for the Veggie Tempura Roll here.
