Happy pub day to Patterns of the Universe! (and a giveaway…)

We have absolutely been loving the coloring book trend over here at The Experiment—most of us have a half-finished Mindfulness Coloring Book as a permanent addition to our night stands or next to our phones. Not only are coloring books perfectly-suited for mindfulness and de-stressing but, as it turns out, they’re pretty ideal for discovering the beauty of (wait for it) math, as well. Patterns of the Universe: A Coloring Adventure in Math and Beauty by Alex Bellos and Edmund Harriss publishes today and we couldn’t be more excited about bringing math to the coloring world and coloring to the math world. Bellos and Harriss have brought together these seemingly unrelated worlds in a book that is both fun to color and a practical demonstration of numerous mathematical concepts. What most of us don’t realize is that math is at the heart of many natural wonders: the silhouette of a snowflake, the spiral seeds of a sunflower, and the symmetry of Sri Yantra mandala.

Though no prior math knowledge is required to enjoy this one-of-a-kind book, the math reveals itself as you color: from the 4D hypercube that casts a starlike shadow to the infinite pattern of the Penrose tiles that never perfectly repeat. Plus, the “creating” section of the book allows users to follow simple steps to design their own images, again revealing the hidden math patterns behind many familiar designs.

Based on the response to Patterns of the Universe so far, others are excited about the publication, too. Amazon just named it one of the “Best Books of December,” Wired ran a slideshow and review of the book, and it was recently featured at Barnes and Nobles’ in-store “Art Unwind.” We are psyched that people are eager to test out the art-math hybrid designs, and so we have also made sample pages available to download and print through our website! We encourage you to test it out and if you enjoy (which we think you will!), be sure to note that the book is available for 20% off when purchased here with code HOLIDAY.

Lastly, in honor of the book’s publication, we are also giving away copies of the book via our Facebook page to THREE lucky winners! Find the giveaway here and enter for your chance to win! Enter before Monday, December 7th at 5pm EST.
